A Fly Enters the Kitchen

¿Why are there son many flies in the kitchen?

Bananas on a table in the kitchen

In the course of our daily lives, we all ask questions about the things that catch our attention from our surroundings. We humans are curious beings, when we notice that some particular things or events repeat themselves and seem to follow a pattern or a logic, our interest is sparked.

We ask, what? how? why? what for?

Many of the questions that we make ourselves seem simple, and for that reason, uninteresting, dumb or irrelevant. Nevertheless, a question might appear simple, but once we start deconstructing it we discover a great complexity and we see that suddenly, to answer it, we first need to answer many other, new questions.

The flies poit of view of the bananas

How do they appear?

Where do they come from?

What do they come for?

Why do they come?

How do they know there is fruit here?

Why do they come for some fruits and not for others?

Why are fruits not attractive to all kinds of flies?

Answering these questions require to empathize a bit with the flies, to place ourselves in their place, “look” through their eyes. We assume that, if they look for fruit, that’s because they need it. But, is that so? What for? And if they want so much to find it, they must have the senses for that. Do they smell the fruit? Do they see it? How?…

Then, what are they looking for fruit for? Do they need it to survive? And when the flies find it, what do they do? Do they eat it? How do they eat it? What do they eat it for? What does fruit give the flies that other foods do not? Why do they choose it? Do they choose it? Do they prefer it?…

And then, when they eat it, what happens? Do flies grow? Do they reproduce? How do they reproduce? Do they lay eggs? Those are many questions. And for sure you can think of a lot more. There are thousands of scientists that dedicate their lives to answering many of these questions… then we have more questions…

Why is all of this interesting?

Why dedicate to study these flies?

We will see, in future episodes, what it means “to study flies” and why there is so much effort put into it.

See you next time!

    • Gracias!
